Australia Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships

You can now apply for the Australia Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships for the 2022-2023 session. The International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) ended on December 31, 2016, and on January 1, 2017, it was replaced by the Research Training Program (RTP). Higher education providers (HEPs) get block grants from the RTP every calendar year to help both domestic and international students get Research Doctorate and Research Masters degrees. These are called “higher degrees by research” (HDRs).

What the scholarship covers and how long it lasts

Under RTP, a university gives an RTP Scholarship winner one or more of the following types of help:

• An RTP Fees Offset pays for a higher degree by research (HDR) student’s tuition fees that the student would have had to pay on their own. This means that a university has to pay the full amount of a student’s tuition fee. This isn’t an allowance.
• An RTP Stipend to help students pay for their living expenses while doing research for a higher degree.
• RTP Allowances help students pay for extra costs related to getting a higher degree (HDR). This includes the cost of moving to do an HDR, the cost of printing and publishing the HDR thesis, and the cost of health insurance for the recipient and their dependents.
RTP scholarships are available for up to two years for a research master’s degree or for at least three years and up to four years (at the HEP’s discretion) for a research doctorate degree.

Eligibility for Australia Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships

To be eligible for an RTP Stipend, RTP Fees Offset, or RTP Allowance, a student must be enrolled in an approved HDR course of study at an Australian HEP and be a domestic or international student. In Section 1.5 of the Commonwealth Scholarships Guidelines (Research) 2017, you can find a list of the basic requirements for an RTP.
