About Adekunle Ajasin University

Adekunle Ajasin University was initially established in March 1982 as Obafemi Awolowo University by the government of the old Ondo State under the leadership of the late Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin. However, in 1985, during the military administration of Navy Commodore Michael Bamidele Otiko, its name was changed to Ondo State University.

The need for relocation arose in 1999 when a new state was created out of the old Ondo State, establishing a new campus in Akungba Akoko. The bill for the relocation was signed into law in November 1999 by Chief Adebayo Adefarati, the then Governor of the State. Consequently, on December 1, 1999, a group of workers from the old site in Ado-Ekiti moved to Akungba Akoko.

In 2004, following the passing of the former Governor Ajasin, another name change was enacted to honor his memory, and the university became known as Adekunle Ajasin University. The amended statute of the university was signed into law in November 2007 by Governor Olusegun Agagu.

Hence, while AAUA’s history was traced back to its establishment in 1982, its relocation to Akungba Akoko on November 5, 1999, marks the beginning of the second phase of its history in its present location.

AAUA has witnessed significant growth and development since its establishment. It started with only four faculties: Arts, Education, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. Over the years, more faculties and departments have been added, including Law, Agriculture, Management Sciences, and Environmental Design and Management.

The university has consistently prioritized academic excellence, research, and community engagement. It has produced graduates who have excelled in various fields and made significant contributions to society.

AAUA is committed to providing quality education, promoting research and innovation, and producing well-rounded individuals equipped with the knowledge and skills to contribute meaningfully to the development of Nigeria and beyond.

Today, Adekunle Ajasin University continues to thrive as a reputable institution of higher learning, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs across various disciplines. It remains dedicated to its mission of producing graduates who are intellectually competent, morally upright, and socially responsible.
