The federal government reiterated that the use of the National Identification Number (NIN) is now a mandatory requirement for registration for JAMB UTME / DE by candidates.
This was announced by the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, on Thursday in Abuja during the Ministerial Press Conference in 2020. He instructed the Joint Board for Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to work out modalities for implementation with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
According to the minister, “the use of the National Identity Number (NIN) for JAMB registration by candidates is now a government policy.
“JAMB is working closely with the National Identity Management Commission to ensure the sustainability of this policy and eliminate multiple registrations,” he said. He added that candidates should use their national identity cards at universities and other tertiary institutions and beyond.
He also revealed that the government has built, equipped and standardized more than 650 JAMB examination centers while planning to build an additional 800 centers in 2021 and 1,000 in 2022 and 1200 in 2023.
Remember that JAMB tried to use NIN for UTME / DE registration two years ago, but later abandoned it when they saw that it was not feasible. Would they be able to do that in the upcoming UTME / DE registration in 2021? We would wait and see.
