The National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, has expressed his understanding for the students’ position over the ongoing strike by the union.
This statement was made by Osodeke as a reaction to the fact that the Federal Government had made N34 billion available for the payment of minimum wage consequential adjustment.
To refresh your memory, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) went on strike on February 14 in order to demand greater welfare packages, better working conditions, and the implementation of several labor agreements made with the Federal Government between 2009 and 2020.
He stated that the kids were enduring hardships for the sake of Nigeria’s educational system and the country’s future.
According to Osodeke, who spoke to NAN about the situation, the children were not being punished but rather were bearing the cost of ensuring that Nigeria had an effective educational system.
Osodeke expressed sympathy for the students, saying that ASUU shared their feelings. “We sympathize with them, and we believe that with what is going on, if we continue with the struggle, we will have an education system in which Nigerian students will have the same lecture rooms as their counterparts from other countries,” Osodeke said.
Meanwhile some Universities have told their students to resume for lectures amid the strike for example UNIABUJA.
The president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) stated that there was no reason to call off the strike because the Federal Government had not responded to their requests.
Because the N34 billion that was released was not part of their demands, he urged the Federal Government to take the necessary action to address the situation.
